To demonstrate understanding of St.
Patrick’s Day by taking a quick quiz.
To choose four new vocabulary words from
the PowerPoint and find the definitions
either using the PowerPoint or a dictionary.
To answer a question about St. Patrick’s
Day in their journals.

3. Diapositiva 3

Take 4 cut out shamrocks from the front table. As you read through
the PowerPoint write down at least 4 vocabulary words that are new to
you. One word for each shamrock. If the definition is given please write
the definition on the back of the shamrock. If the definition is not
given, use a dictionary.

4. St. Patrick’s Day

• St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each
year on March 17th.
• People of Irish origin celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day in honor of Saint
Patrick who died on March 17, 461.
• Saint Patrick was important because
he established 300 churches in
Ireland and increased the popularity
of Christianity.

5. Symbols

Shamrock – The Shamrock is a symbol of St. Patrick’s Day
because they are found all over the country of Ireland. A
famous legend says that Patrick used its three leaves to
explain the Trinity (Father-Son-Holy Spirit)
4 Leaf Clover – Four leaf clovers are very hard
to find. If you find one you will have good
luck!

Leprechauns – Leprechauns are little men that dress like
shoemakers. The Leprechauns are paid with gold coins.
The gold coins are then added to a large pot. If you catch a
Leprechaun they must show you where they hid the pot of
gold.

Green – People wear green on St. Patrick's day
because green is the color of Shamrocks and spring. If
you are not wearing green, you will be pinched!
Corned Beef and Cabbage – To celebrate
the holiday many people eat corned beef
and cabbage.

It is said that Saint Patrick got rid of all the
snakes in Ireland. It is said that St. Patrick
stood on a mountain top and raised a wooden
stick in the air to get rid of the snakes. To this
day there are no snakes in Ireland.
