How social
problems are
related to the
environment?
• Environmental issues are
the harmful effects of human
activities on the
environment. These include
pollution, overpopulation,
waste disposal, climate
change, global warming, the
greenhouse effect, etc.

4.

Some of the current
environmental issues that
require urgent attention
are:
• Climate change
• Global warming
• Ozone layer depletion
• Water pollution
• Air pollution
• Solid waste management

5.

6.

Global warming
• the unusually rapid increase in
Earth’s average surface
temperature over the past
century primarily due to the
greenhouse gases released as
people burn fossil fuels.

7.

Ozone layer depletion
• is the thinning of the ozone
layer present in the upper
atmosphere. This happens
when the chlorine and bromine
atoms in the atmosphere come
in contact with ozone and
destroy the ozone molecules.
One chlorine can destroy
100,000 molecules of ozone. It
is destroyed more quickly than it
is created

8.

Water pollution
• is the contamination of water
bodies with substances that
interfere with the natural
functioning and beneficial use of
the water bodies. This occurs
mainly as a result of anthropogenic
activities that cause the release of
substances such as chemicals or
pathogens into the subsurface
groundwater, lakes, rivers,
estuaries, rivers, and oceans
affecting their ecology.

9.

Air pollution
• is contamination of the
indoor or outdoor
environment by any
chemical, physical or
biological agent that
modifies the natural
characteristics of the
atmosphere.

10.

Solid waste
management
• is the process of collecting,
storing, treating, and
disposing of solid waste in an
environmentally and socially
responsible manner. It
involves various activities
such as collection of waste,
transportation, recycling,
composting, and landfill
disposal. The goal is to reduce
the adverse effects of waste
on public health and the
environment.
