1962 and is a dystopian novel.
Burgess wrote this novel after
doctors diagnosed him with a brain
tumor and said he had about a year
left to live. (However, Burgess did
not die and lived until 1993).

Main character
The main character of the novel is
fifteen-year-old teenager Alex. He is
an aggressive sadist, for whom
violence is the meaning of life. He
has three such friends. Together
they form a gang that terrifies the
city at night. However, in society,
Alex successfully pretends to be a
good person, and this allowed him
to remain free.

Plot
One night Alex accidentally kills a
woman whom he and his friends
wanted to rob. His gang betrays
him and the police catch him. Alex
ends up in prison for 14 years,
where he learns about the
possibility of release - he needs to
conduct an experiment on himself,
during which a person is given an
injection and a movie is shown.
After that, the person begins to hate
violence.

Interesting fact
In the book, teenagers use a
fictional dialect - nadsat, which is
based on Russian. For example, an
old person is stari kashka, friends
are drugi and many other words.
The fact is that Burgess was once
in Leningrad, and after
communicating with young people,
he decided to use their slang in his
book.
