Oil tanker
• An oil tanker carrying oil and fuel
oil under the Liberian flag sank on
March 16, 1978, 5 km off the
coast of France. As a result,
219,797 tons of oil and 4,000 tons
of fuel oil poured into the Celtic
Sea, which led to the largest loss
of marine fauna ever recorded
after the oil spill

3.

Hydrogen bomb
• Castle Bravo is the code name of
the first test of a thermonuclear
(hydrogen) bomb. The explosion
occurred in the Marshall Islands
on March 1, 1954. It was the most
powerful nuclear charge ever
detonated (officially) The United
States, which led to the largest
radioactive contamination
provoked by the United States of
America.

4.

Garbage Island
• Another example of the negative
effects caused by humans is a
Large garbage island in the Pacific
Ocean. When plastic is in the sea
for a long period of time, it
decomposes into smaller and
smaller parts until it is eaten by
organisms on the surface, thus
becoming part of the food chain.
Some types of plastic release
toxic chemicals, such as bisphenol
A, which leads to poisoning of
birds and fish.

Mud Volcano
• In 2006, PT Lapindo Brantas workers
were looking for natural gas on the
island of Java in Indonesia near the Ring
of Fire. It is difficult to explain what
motivated them, because, firstly,
according to preliminary studies, there
was no gas in that area, and secondly,
the place was potentially dangerous for
work. And even when, after the initial
stage of drilling, steam, hydrogen
sulfide and mud were released two
hundred meters from the well, the
workers did not stop drilling. In the
following days, emissions increased,
and two months later 11 surrounding
villages and rice fields with an area of
2.5 kilometers were buried under a
layer of mud. A gas pipeline exploded
under the pressure of mud, which killed
7 people.
