A famous traveler of Russia, a
merchant from Tver, who became
the first inhabitant of Europe, he not
only studied, but also described
India, twenty-five years before the
colonizers from Portugal got there.

4.

List of his discoveries
went along the Volga
towards India;
visited the sacred temple of
Goddess Parvati;
1468
reached Feodosia;
1472
1474
1471
1473
reached the port of Chaul;
explored the western coast
of the continent;

5.

He was one of the first known contemporaries
of that time to reach India. The merchant left
the Tver pier down the Volga, sailed to the
Caspian Sea, crossed Persia on foot, swam
across the Arabian Sea and landed on the
"shore of the fabulous country of Hindustan". Of
course, such a route would not have occurred
to either Vasco da Gama or Christopher
Columbus. Athanasius, without knowing it, was
ahead of the famous Europeans by almost a
quarter of a century. The Russian traveler "went
beyond three seas" and left behind an
ethnographic manuscript rich in details.

6.

His contribution to travel was great.
Afanasy Nikitin was the first European
to open the way to India. Thanks to its
discovery, Russian merchants were
able to bring "outlandish" goods to
their homeland. Afanasy Nikitin was
the first to open a land route to India.
Thanks to him, trade relations between
India and his native country began.
After him, Vasco da Gama decided to
open a waterway to India, which he
succeeded.
