The musical heritage of the South was developed
by both whites and blacks, both influencing each
other directly and indirectly. The South's musical
history actually starts before the Civil War, with
the songs of the African slaves and the highlands
folk music brought from Europe.
Early rock n' roll musicians from the southeast :
Bo Diddley (Mississippi), Ray Charles (from
Florida, though his musical career started in
Seattle), Carl Perkins (Tennessee), Elvis Presley
(born in Mississippi, although lived in Memphis,
Tennessee during his career)

Every year, the people of Florida fight
with the people of Alabama. The people
of Florida gather in a bar in Pensacola and
toss stinky fish at their neighbors. It’s
pretty stinky, but somehow very funny.
North Carolina towns include names such
as Frying Pan Landing, Sandy Mush,
Lizard Lick, Whynot, and Climax.
The “teddy bear” was originated
from a hunting trip taken in
Mississippi by President Roosevelt
